B LEAKS 1: IIFT

Leak : First of All Thank you for giving your time to B Leaks. I Hope you are doing great.

We know IIFT has few best placements in these days, please answer all questions considering average placements and profiles

B Leak: How’s Life at IIFT ? First Year and Second Year Life ?

IIFTian 1 : First year is more about PDP, business school and corporate competitions, PORs, summer placements, studies, exams and yes parties!! You don’t study much except when exams are approaching. But during exams everyone studies a lot. We have a week long Inter section sports fest followed by a week long IPL style Sports fest. We also have an NGO attachment in the 1st year like most other colleges.

2nd year – It’s when your juniors come to the college. you also decide your majors. You conduct the PDP for juniors and gear yourself for the final placements.

Every time of the year something or the other keeps happening, either it is the PDP or the POR election process, or the Big Fight or UWL or Alumni Reunion or Farewell or exams.. you can remain busy all year around very easily.

B Leak: Social Responsibility is a part of your credit. Is it a burden , profile building and learning or Time Pass ? [ since you can’t force (make a credit) to do CSR activates ]

IIFTian 1 : It is how you take it. You want to learn and help the NGO, you do it. You want to sit at home, chill and do nothing, you can do that.. You come to the NGO and still do nothing, you can do that as well. You just have to know in which NGO this is possible and how to get it done.

I have seen people wanting to help the NGOs even after their 1 month attachment period is over. I also know people who haven’t done a penny of work at NGO.

A lot of factors are to be noted here – The attitude of people at the NGO, the college authorities, the students, etc. The timing is also very weird- it is around X-Mas, new year and Lohri.. So not many would want not to go home and slog at the NGO.

B Leak: IIFT is known as Madina for Trade . Is it a reality of just a Myth ?

IIFTian 1 : For lot many people, IIFT is about Fashion technology but for the ones who are aware enough, IIFT is a Trade B-School. But off late most students want to specialize in Finance or Marketing. Trade companies don’t have postings in India. You get posted in Africa, Nigeria etc. Most people don’t want a job there. Investment Banker and Brand Manager are the most sought after designations across any B-School.

But compared to any other B school, IIFT is the best for learning Trade. If you want a career in Trade, IIFT is the best place to go in India. Other colleges will have just a chapter about Intl. trade, we have entire courses dedicated to Intl aspect of Finance, marketing and Trade.

IIFT needs to decide whether it wants to remain a Trade B school or wants to become just another B School.

B Leak: We have heard that being Profs and Administrative Dept of IIFT has sarkari attitude (Ho Jayega Attitude) – They are not student friendly. What’s your take on this

IIFTian 1: The admin does have a sarkari attitude. The organization is run as a sarkari organization as it comes under the Ministry of Commerce. But the professors are not like that. We have some very passionate professors. Some for whom teaching is life.

On the whole, the college has all types of professors. Some go the extra mile to make you learn, some teach as if it is still school, some are extremely professional.

B Leak: How’s internal faculty (Profs) and how’s guest lectures? [in general students of B-Schools are not happy with 80% of internal Profs (80-20 Pareto Rules)

IIFTian 1: Internal faculty is good. Guest faculty is better in some subjects. IIFT doesn’t really follow the 80-20 ratio I suppose. We have had lot many guest faculty come during each of our trimesters. The only problem with the guest lecturers is that they prefer coming on Saturdays or Sundays or in evening slots which prolongs the day for us and leaves us with lesser time for self-study or other things.

B Leak: One question is always asked. Is D=K ??? IIFT Delhi is same as IIFT Kolkata Campus. Please be honest in this answer (In the time of admission when one gets Kolkata then converted to Delhi – We say it up gradation, means Delhi seems to be better than Kolkata) What are the factors which create differences – if there is any.

IIFTian 1: IIFT is one college. Delhi and Kolkata are just 2 different campuses. You have youself answered this question by saying that Kolkata to Delhi is upgradation.

IIFT Kolkata has a newer campus and a relatively bigger one. You get single room in Kolkata whereas in Delhi you might have to share accommodation with 1-2 other people.

I don’t know much about the teaching faculty. How different they are in the other campus.

IIFT Kolkata attends most guest lectures by companies and corporates by VC.

The main difference comes due to Placement activities. Some companies are handled by Kol PC and some by Delhi PC. Partiality by both ensures absence of equal opportunities for students of both campuses. This differs in degree every year.

Also some companies have a rule of allowing students from colleges with at least 10 years of existence to apply. Due to this Kolkata students have been at losing end, but this is expected to end soon.

Please read Quora for more clarity.

B Leak: Which stream of IIFT is better (Fin, Marketing, Ops, General Management others)

IIFTian 1 : Fin and Marketing are best streams in IIFT. (no particular order)

B Leak: IIFT does not have HR course (stream) . Does it affect in placement ? [No alumni is in top HR team of any company)

IIFTian 1 : Yes. It does affect majorly. But the Placement Committee keeps this in mind when working for the placements. We attract companies on basis of our talent not on basis of links.

B Leaks : In B-schools  it is generally considered that IITians or students having Work Ex from Consultancy or Big Firms are having added advantage in terms of selection of profiles during summers and placements. IS IT TRUE FOR IIFT too ?? Hows life for an average or below average students at IIFT???

IIFTian 1: This is not a writing on the wall. If you have studied well and continue to do so, your experience and acads will help you. But this is not always. I have seen IITians getting placed on 1st day and some getting placed towards the last days of the placement processes.

Just because you are an IITian doesn’t mean that you can relax and chill. Past is past. You are as good as your last day. This is a race and you have to compete or go home.

B Leaks : CGPA / GPA / Grad points are how much important for summers and Placement ??

IIFTian 1 : Acads are important for Summers but you can overcome that during the interaction with the company representatives during the interaction with them. Not all companies go for just acads. Some people make the cut through extended shortlists as well.

If you are able to impress the company people, your acads won’t act as a hurdle.

B Leaks :  Importance of work ex to non work ex in IIFT ??? Answer in general and profile shortlisting

IIFTian 1 : Your work ex doesn’t matter that much. I have seen freshers bagging same profiles as those bagged by people with work ex. Not many profiles or jobs are offered that people with only a specific work experience will get. Most profiles are open for all.

B Leaks :   Are the placement policies skewed towards people with strong profile offering them multiple choices at the cost of the placement of the students with weak profiles?

IIFTian 1 : Placement committee ensures that all people get sufficient choices. We, like most other B schools, follow a One offer policy. So a person with a strong profile has to exit the process if he gets placed in a company. He cannot keep on appearing for the rest of the companies. This ensures that people with weaker profiles get to appear in the rest of the companies.

B Leak: Hows summers and placement of IIFT. (If you have data then please share)

IIFTian 1 : The data is available on the website of the college in form of placement reports and also at InsideIIM.

B Leak: IIFT releases (ed) placement data. It is presumed that placement data is first beautified then released ? [ In data it is maximum CTC  not the actual – Max CTC includes maximum bonus and other expenses to company]

IIFTian 1 : IIFT comes under Ministry of Commerce. The data that is all quoted is audited and cannot be edited.  CTC mentioned is as per the offer letter of the company. Bonuses in the form of stock options etc are included as this is the norm with all other b-schools.

B Leak: IIFT Delhi does not have a good infra (compare to its own league of B-School – campus). So young generation feels it is not a good B-School, and not have a great life. What do you think, IIFTian (Delhi) miss the B-School life ?

IIFTian 1 : IIFT makes the best use of its Infra. Yes we don’t have playing grounds and lakes but is that really what you come for in a B school? Having set up in 1963, We are amongst the oldest B schools in India. Situated in South Delhi, we don’t really have a choice of expanding as the land around costs in crores. Still the college has acquired some land in south Delhi for setting up another campus.

Compared to the batch size of 160 odd, we have a very good infra. Yes the condition of the hostel rooms is not very good. Renovation of the institute should be taken up and hopefully it will be soon.

B Leak: IIFT Delhi and IIFT Kolkata are step brother of a same parent. Do you treat students of other campuses as step brother, and dont want to share placements seats with each other.

IIFTian 1 :Students of each campus have friends in other campus. We don’t treat them as a step brother.

B Leak: It is found that 3+ (years) is not an ideal profile for companies (in short listing a profile). Is it the same case in IIFT too ?

IIFTian 1 : Yes. Based on my experience, a work ex of 18-24 months is best for Indian B school students.

B Leak: What is the ideal profile for IIFT ?

IIFTian 1 : No such ideal profile. Freshers also get admission. Engineers, Commerce grads and doctors also get admission.

Would like to take few questions of Aspirants (We have shared a doc when they can ask questions) :

Aspirant 1  Question: Is there any discrimination done in terms of placements between delhi nd kolkata students...quora is full with views on either sides..if not why does the placement Cv form contain the kolkata nd delhi stamps to show the recrutiers who are from delhi and who are from kolkata?

IIFTian 1 :The discrimination stems from the placement committee and not the companies. If the Delhi and Kolkata PC could work in tandem, the institute could on the whole benefit a lot.

Aspirant 2  Question: I want the realistic comparison between IIFT Kolkata and Delhi. Media members of IIFT always say that there is no disparity in placements, but I've seen many users on pagalguy as well as quora trying to tell the truth that iift kolkata's students are given secondary treatment in placements. Is this true? And how is life at IIFT as a college.

IIFTian 1 : It is not that IIFT Kolkata students get secondary treatment in placements. Many of them have gotten into same big brands as the Delhi students have gotten into. The discrimination primarily stems from the placement committee and its activities. They need to get their shit clean.

Life is pretty good.

Aspirant 3 Question:  What are the difficulties one is likely to face because of low undergraduation score (53%), and what should be done to overcome it so that it doesn't affect Summers and finals? (since IIFT has history of admitting students with not so great acads, how do the students who get selected fare during placements, are there ample of opportunities and shortlists available?)

IIFTIAN 1 :  You might not get shortlists early on. Be open and don’t restrict yourself to a particular company or domain. Remember beggars are not choosers. Interact with your seniors and the company representatives. Try to impress in guest lectures and company interaction by asking good questions. You can land yourself an interview opportunity that way.

Aspirant 4 Question: Consulting opportunities , how to get Into big4 through case competition from here.

IIFTIAN 1 :  Participate in the competitions floated by the companies as and when you have time. Give your best submission. The best approach to get into a consulting company is to have worked in the industry first for some good number of years. With experience, you are more valued than any other consultant. Don’t get into a consulting co. in a haste.

Aspirant 5 Question:  Prospects for someone with more than 2 years IT work experience at IIFT? What roles can one expect to get after an MBA from IIFT?

IIFTIAN 1:You can get into any domain you want. Go through the placement reports and discussions on quora.

Aspirant 5 Question:  Would it be advisable to go for finance specialization after more than 2 years work experience in an IT company? Would it be difficult to get jobs in finance and marketing specializations and hence just stick to general management and consultancy roles?

IIFTIAN 1: It shouldn’t and wouldn’t be difficult. You will get ample opportunities to get into Finance or marketing. Just prepare well in advance for them.

B Leak : Please  compare – IIFT Vs SP JAIN, IIFT Vs MDI, IIFT Vs NM , IIFT Vs New IIMs , IIFT Vs SIBM, IIFT Vs SCHMRD , IIFT Vs IIT Mumbai

IIFTIAN 1S :  IIFT > NMIMS, New IIMs, SIBM, SCMHRD any day except for their HR courses.

IIFT, MDI, SPJAIN, NM and to a great extent SCMHRD fall in the same cluster. Similar companies come to these colleges and offer similar profiles. Each one of them has a certain edge over the other in some sense. Each college has some pros and cons. Example NM loses out because of its huge batch size but it has the HR course and its alumni in different companies which ensures that they somehow make up for that.

IIFT and MDI is the case of 19-21. These colleges are essentially in the same league.

Please read the comparison by a mentor or a coaching institute as I cant comment on this. Read this if you want - http://www.imschennai.in/iims-versus-fms-xl-mdi-and-other-top-schools/ or https://www.gpkafunda.com/jayein-toh-jayein-kahaan-2014-which-institute/

B Leaks : A decent acads (85+ ) and 97%ile in CAT (as appearing candidate – not cleared Graduation) ; whats your suggestion – IIFT or CAT 2017

IIFTIAN 1 : If you can get a job till next year and are willing to take the risk of repeating CAT, go for CAT 2017. Don’t just drop cz you will get admission in June-July 2018 and a drop till that time wont look good on resume.

B Leak : 36+ months IT work ex ??? What’s your suggestion, should he join IIFT or GREAT LAKES and other B-schools?

IIFTIAN 1 :  No clue. Read this if it helps - https://www.gpkafunda.com/jayein-toh-jayein-kahaan-2014-which-institute/

Unaware about Great Lakes. So not qualified to answer this question.

B Leaks : Give me few reasons one should join IIFT ?

IIFTIAN 1 :  This research is for you to do. You don’t go into a car showroom and ask why should I buy your Car.

B Leaks : Give me few reasons one should not join IIFT ?

IIFTIAN 1 :  If you get admission into a “better” B school, don’t join IIFT.

Thanks for your time :)
